When I learned any language I know today (English, German, Finnish, Japanese), I never had a tutor to help me and when I did try to get one, repetitive textbook exercises just didn't help me progress in any way or match my pace of learning, so I fully understand how a person who wants to learn a language may feel. While it's true that I am young and have no professional diploma of teaching to back up my legitimacy as a teacher, facts that would usually be enough to deter students, I believe that I can bring a fresh perspective on language learning and I want to be less of an authority figure who would tell you how to learn a language properly (because in all honesty there is no single correct way), and more of an equally, if not more, enthusiastic companion who will assist you in everything she can and inspire you to carry on learning together this beautiful, complex, but never daunting language.

My strong points:
- I reject teaching by textbooks. I believe that textbooks often turn language learning into a chore and isolate it from real life situations or cultural context. Japanese is a highly nuanced and interesting language, where speech patterns change depending with whom you talk to/write to, and textbooks, even while providing a good foundation, simply cannot teach you all that, whereas I take it as my goal.
- Instead, I want to immerse my students into Japanese language through reading, speaking, and listening, and I will start speaking with you from our first lesson, mixing Japanese into our English conversations little by little to get you accustomed to the language. Speaking from my own experience of learning 4 languages (English, Finnish, German, and Japanese), language immersion is the most effective way to learn a language.
- While learning all my four languages, I quickly picked up the correct pronunciation by listening extensively and mimicking speech patterns of native speakers, which is why I believe I would be a good choice to teach you correct pronunciation through listening comprehension and talking directly with me.
- Although it's a very niche topic, I hope it would catch the interest of my students to explore traditional Japanese literature and poetry with me. I am very passionate about it as of now and find immense beauty in literature and poetry of the Heian period (10-12th century, the golden age of Japanese literature). My favourite author is Murasaki Shikibu. I believe that the whole feel of the traditional novel such as the tale of Genji is lost in translation to English. I also read it in classical Japanese language (bungo/kobun). I can share with you some beautiful Japanese 5 verse poems (not haiku, which came to be much later!) or read The tale of Genji with you.
- I am interested in Japanese culture and history, and may share some interesting facts about them that you may have not known.
